We humans get pleasure when our mind wanders; daydreaming can be fun… and many times we don’t even realise that it is happening. And we carry on… ‘he said this’, ‘I will do this in turn’…and thoughts just keep spiraling in, never to leave. Swami Vivekananda said that the mind is like a restless monkey who has consumed hundreds of bottles of alcohol, and on top of that been stung by several scorpions…just imagine how it will behave. This is the state of a restless mind.
In the Geeta, Arjun says, the movement of the mind is very difficult to track, how can one manage the mind? To which Shri Krishna replies, sure it is difficult, I know, but this can be overcome with abhyas. Give your mind the potion of ‘Hari Naam.’ The moment it starts running around, grab it and ask it to chant Hari Naam or just pray.
Sometimes we exhaust ourselves thinking so much about an issue that we are left with no strength to do anything about it. The mind is very restless. Set it to task, so that it does not interfere with your dhyan and the brain is free to receive Universal Directives and have the strength to follow the teachings of evolved ones.
